Update -- almost free!
Sorry for the radio silence--my computer wouldn't charge yesterday in these hospital outlets, but it looks good now.
The past day has been pretty low key. Mom has been eating most of her meals (unless it looks gross). We took a few walks around the floor and down to "the healing lounge," which is the large family waiting area that has a lot of plants and trees. Also a lot of TV watching, although that has been hard given she doesn't have her glasses on. I think we will break the side off of an old pair of glasses when we get home.
In terms of the surgical site, it's healing nicely. I don't think I accurately described it in the previous post, but she does indeed have a "skin flap." It's just from the side of her face rather than her arm. But it's nice and pink. There are about 60-70 stitches (Dad stopped counting at 70 stitches) so the scar should look pretty good. One of the nurses said it looked like the stitches they give you for a tummy tuck.
One funny thing, at least we are laughing about it, is that the piece of skin they used to repair the area was the skin under her sideburn. So her hair line on that side has moved, and there is a patch of silver hair on the top part of her scar. Kindof like a 2nd eyebrow or mustache on the side of her eye. Radiation will probably take it all away, but for now we laugh about it.
There is also a drain in to prevent the area from filling up and popping stitches out, but that should come out today, because it looks like she is being discharged! YAY! She is looking forward to a really nice nap, preferably one that goes from now until tomorrow morning. The hospital bed is not comfortable and her abs and neck are sore (it's one of those air-filled hospital beds and she feels like she is doing a core workout whenever she is laying in it). Pain from the surgery seems to be getting a little better and is more localized today. Yesterday she said it felt like she had been punched in the face.
That's it for now! A lot of sleeping in her future over the next few days. She appreciates all of the comments; I read all of them to her from the blog and facebook.

ReplyDeleteAmazing path to recovery. Doesn’t surprise me as she is a tough cookie �� Hoping the healing continues and the pain subsides. Any surgery as we get older is challenging. Keeping her in our thoughts.
